I've shared a two articles that speak to this and paint what I believe but this is just a rant I couldn't fit into a comment; it starts with the bit from an article that begins with where many other articles stop:
For starters, the most positive aspect of the bill is that it make clear that FISA and the criminal wiretap laws are the exclusive means by which electronic surveillance may be conducted. It's true that the old FISA bill says the same thing, and in any case it wouldn't surprise me if Bush issued a signing statement saying he disagrees with this section, but still, at least it's something. linkThe original bill said the same thing about "exclusive means" that the new one does but, with all the other "negative aspects" of the bill (I don't know why he doesn't just say "abuses" firsts but holds that word for the next line.) we're supposed to celebrate? Moreover, we're not supposed to protest? We're supposed to breathe in the gas and not smell capitulation? We're not supposed to recognize the dotted line running down the middle of the Democratic Party that again reads, "fold here"?
Kevin here is right - it's not going to get the attention but the rest of us are paying attention. The rest of us who support Obama and his stand for Change. I have to say that, though I understand his handlers, such as they are, are going to say to stay clear of anything that looks like he's Against protecting this country - but if he can't find a way to do it right; if he can't whether that with all the money we're giving his campaign to distract, cover up or explain his way out of it then it does not bode well for Change.
I am a strong believer in Obama and what he wants to do but I am not hot on the Dems and I really, really, need to see that he can lead a charge, that he can take over the reigns on some of these issues. ...and if they're not willing to follow his lead then all of us have a much, much more bleak future to look forward to... :o(
(*Note: Hilary has done, nor seemed poised to do, anything different from the rest of them on this topic.)
